De La Salle rugby goes into this weekend against Bishop O’Dowd favored to win and move to 4-0.

It’s been a good start for the Northern California boys high school team, with victories over Bellarmine Prep, Christian Brothers, and Clayton Valley, that last being the curtain-raiser for Cal v UCLA at Witter Field.

“That game was a great and memorable experience for the high school players,” said De La Salle Head Coach Rob Duncanson. “Our team has been working hard on fundamentals and is enjoying a productive season. We hope to continue to improve each week as we move through a very competitive league.”

De La Salle has a long history as one of the best football high schools in the country. Rugby has been a poor stepsister to football, but with Duncanson being the varsity rugby coach, the team has turned the corner. They recorded a good season in 2013 and have started well this year.

The halfback hinge of Michael Goodwin and Charlie Maloney have been instrumental in running the attack, and with the forwards led by prop Brian Joyce and No. 8 Charlie Loudon, the team has a good core of leaders.

With that, center Chris Leahy, flanker Spencer Hughes, and hooker Jack Gilchrist have been able to shine.

Also undefeated is NIT defending champs Jesuit. De La Salle and Jesuit face off March 29.
