Last week in Eden Park Stadium, New Zealand, England won their second consecutive Under 20, IRB Junior World Cup Championship, defeating South Africa 21-20. Host New Zealand easily defeated Ireland 45-23 for third place.

Importantly, Italy beat Fiji for 11th place, relegating the Fijians to play next year in the Junior World Rugby Trophy tournament (JWRT). The 12th JWC spot next year will be filled by emerging Japan, which won this year’s JWRT against Tonga 35-10. The USA U-20s finished third with a narrow win over Uruguay, and both XVs will play in this secondary event in 2015.

In the JWC finale, England broke out to a 21-13 halftime lead, but the Junior Boks scored seven points in the second half to make the score 21-20. Junior Player of the Year, South Africa’s Handre Pollard led all scorers with 12-points.

Italy will host the 2015 JWC tournament.
