The undefeated La Costa Canyon High School of Encinitas, Calif. faces
undefeated Torrey Pines High School of San Diego in the last match of the
regular season Saturday afternoon at Torrey Pines High School's football
stadium.
Both schools are in the San Dieguito Union School District in North San
Diego County and are intense rivals in all sports. In fact, both have
finished 1st and 2nd in San Diego County the past several years for "top
high school athletic program" as named by the San Diego Union
Tribune.
LCC and TPHS are competing for the championship of the Southern California
Youth Rugby "White Division."
High School Rugby in Southern California has divided itself into three
divisions representing 35 schools this season. The Red Division (100% of
players from a single school under the direction of that school's
Athletic Director); White (at least 80% of players from a single school,
and in some way recognized by the school); and Blue (new, less experienced
programs). There are 15 teams in the White Division, which includes eight
teams from Los Angeles and Orange Counties, and seven from San Diego.
Torrey Pines, Patrick Henry, High Tech High/Pt. Loma, La Costa Canyon,
Mission Vista (Oceanside), San Pasqual and University
City/Clairemont.
Cathedral leads the Red with a 5-0 record with no one really close. Second
is Fallbrook and they are 3-3.
In the White, it's a little more crowded at the top, as Torrey Pines and La
Costa Canyon lead the White South. Desert Sands is 6-0 and leading the
North 2 over Citrus Valley. And Wilson leads in their league, North 1, with
a 4-0 record.
In a non-league game, LCC tied Cathedral. Wilson plays Citrus Valley this
weekend and Desert Sands plays Palos Verdes.
