Former Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager and longtime NHL executive Brian
Burke is joining Rugby Canada's board of directors.
Burke, who was fired as Maple Leafs GM in January and is currently working as
a scout for the Anaheim Ducks, has worked for the Vancouver Canucks and
Hartford Whalers, and also the US Olympic hockey team. Born in Rhode Island,
Burke played rugby at the Harvard Business School as he worked toward his law
"I'm really excited," Burke told reporters Tuesday. "I think it's a great
sport and I think the future of rugby in Canada is really bright."
A dual citizen of the
United States and Canada, Burke was also GM for the U.S. Olympic men's hockey
team that won the silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Games. Burke is the
director of player personnel for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
