Crowd Mingles with Players After the Match

A second-string Australia XV defeated the touring Barbarians 31-28 in a patchy, non-Test exhibition match of two disparate halves. The Baa-Baas jumped out to a 21-5 lead at the 32nd minute and seemed headed for an upset and a big win, when the Wallabies narrowed the score to 21-12 at the break, the try coming just as the horn sounded.

In the second half, Australia outscored the opponents 19-7, eventually prevailing five tries to four. The Baa-Baas surged ahead 28-26 on a nifty kick ahead to the wing that scored a try under the post. But two penalties reduced the visitors' side to 13 players, not enough weight to prevent the Wallabies from scoring on a rolling maul to make it 31-28.

The three-minute highlights of the match can be viewed at Of note is that in the 21st minute of play (second part of the short You Tube video above), the Barbarians tried an “up the jumper” maneuver (a hidden ball in the jersey trick), which is not allowed under the Laws, and the try was nullified.

The Barbarians will fly to England to meet New Zealand at Twickenham next Saturday, November 4. A large crowd is expected for the match.
