The spectacular and surprising Kenyan win in the Singapore 7s generated worldwide media acclaim. Every newspaper or rugby blog expressed praise that the East African team won its first Cup title since joining the circuit in Dubai in 1999.
The Kenyans had finished runners-up twice before, in Adelaide 2008/2009 and then Wellington 2012/2013. Third time proved the charm as they routed Fiji 30-7 in the finale. Beating the Fijians, this year’s HSBC World Rugby’s points leader, proved an added bonus.
Colllins Insera was named the player of the final, another accolade for the squad.
Additionally, the International Olympic Committee must be delighted with the result. The Men’s rugby sevens looms more competitive with this Kenyan victory, adding more drama to the new event in Rio this summer,
Social media lit up after the victory with commendation also coming from Kenya President Uhuru on Twitter.
At whistle’s end, the joyous team gathered to sing a gospel song.
