Rebounding from a difficult loss against Samoa in the Cup Quarterfinals at the Hong Kong 7s, USA defeated Argentina 28-14 to advance to the Plate Final. The Eagles will square off against Australia who beat England 12-7 in a hotly contested match. Argentina kicked off to USA and the Pumas forced a turnover and subsequent penalty. Argentina kicked for touch resulting in a lineout about ten meters out. The Pumas got the ball out wide where Franco Sabato was tackles by two defenders. From the ground, Sabato offloaded inside to Rodrigo Etchart for the try and the 7-0 early lead. The Eagles answered off the next kickoff when Madison Hughes broke the line inside and passed to an open Zack Test. Barrett got the ball in support and powered through a Puma tackle to dive for the equalizing try, 7-7. Argentina would have a line break of their own with Sabato running free until Perry Baker tracked him down and forced him out of bounds. On the ensuing lineout, USA continued their attack with Maka Unufe breaking a tackle in the middle of the field then hard stepping the sweeper for an 80 meter try. The Eagles kept the momentum when Unufe broke the line again and offloaded to Baker in support for the try. At half, USA led Argentina 21-7. USA head coach Mike Friday told his troops to be relentless in the second half and don't let up. For the first half of the second period, the possession was back and forth with the Eagles concentrating on defense and field position. With two minutes left, Baker recovered a Puma kick and the ball was cycled out wide to Test who sprinted down the sideline. With one man to beat, Test stepped inside to dodge the defender and cap off the 70 meter try. With limited time remaining, Argentina got the ball back and Francisco Morello gingerly scored with no time left. Argentina put up a good fight, but the Eagles soar into the Plate Final to face Australia with the 28-14 win.
