The USA Falcons capped off Day One of the NACRA 7s in Cayman Islands with a 31-0 shutout of Trinidad & Tobago.
Sparked by some nifty passing by Shalom Suniula the Falcons led early. Suniula made a break and worked a nice switch move with one teammate and then popped an excellent short back to Jack Halalilo for the opening try and a 7-0 lead.
T&T got the ball back on the restart after Nate Augspurger's restart didn't make it ten meters. T&T did very well to keep the pressure on. A penalty, and then not retreating ten allowed Trinidad & Tobago almost to their tryline. But some dogged defense kept T&T out of in-goal, and then Carlin Isles made a tackle and forced a penalty to relieve the pressure.
Some smart play from the forwards got the USA going forward, especially from Mike Ziegler, and then Suniula took a pass on the hop, stepped a defender, and cruised in under the posts. Suniula kicked the conversion, too, to make it 14-0.
The next try came for Nu'u Punimata but it was all Carlin Isles. Isles chased a kick way back into his 22, gathered the ball up, and ran back and forth, up and around well into the Trinidad 22. He then worked a switch move with Halalilo, who fed Punimata for a brilliant try. 19-0 at halftime.
The second half started with T&T on the attack. Only some superb tackles from Isles stopped a try, and eventually a turnover produced a long-range try for Augspurger. Right after that, Suniula drew the attention of several defenders and flipped a pass to Halalilo to finish the game off.
The USA win their pool and face the Bahamas Sunday at 11:20AM ET.
