The United States fell to 1-3 at Gold Coast with a 19-10 loss to Scotland in the Bowl Quarterfinals. The Eagles’ offense was stagnant much of the first half, as they strung some passes together but made critical errors to end possession.
The Eagles made the first break of the game, with Brett Thompson streaking up the touch line into Scotland territory. He pulled back when he decided he was cornered and dished inside to Pat Blair. The former Central Washington All American was brought down and called for holding on, as Thompson was a bit late to the breakdown. Scotland took the penalty the other direction for a converted try.
The USA went back on the attack, using a direct style with some offloads, but Zack Test was tackled into touch. The Eagles stole the lineout and swung the ball wide. Test stepped inside the last defender on the wing and got into the try zone. Folau Niua missed the conversion, leaving the USA down 7-5.
Scotland then took the ball into the American end after Hawkins was called for entering a ruck from the side. The Eagles managed to turn the ball over, but repeatedly took contact inside their own 22 and coughed up possession twice and committed three penalties with Scotland knocking on the door, resulting in Thompson being sin binned.
Luckily, the Eagles’ desperate defense held Scotland up on their last lunge toward the try line, preventing the Scottish from extending the lead before halftime.
Scotland’s Alex Glashan used his speed to score back-to-back tries in the meat of the second half, putting the Americans down 19-5 and effectively out of reach. Thompson did manage a try right on full time for the USA, but it was too little too late.
The USA now moves to the Shield Semifinals at 10:36 CST, where they’ll face the loser of Canada versus Spain.
