All American and former Cal captain Derek Asbun is tearing it up at Oxford University, where he is pursing further study.

Asbun started at openside flanker for Oxford this past Saturday against a combined lineup from the Henley Hawks and London Wasps Developmental program. Asbun was mentioned in reports for his aggressive play, and the flanker scored a try late in the second half in his team’s 35-0 victory.

It’s not easy to break into the Oxford Blues 1st XV as the team often has very experienced players (Oxford includes graduate students). Asbun’s first run-on was against Siberian Federal University in Krasnoyarsk during Oxford’s tour of Siberia. There Asbun started at hooker, a position he has filled in at on occasion, but is still a strange one for him. Still,he subbed on against RC Krasnyi Yar and also in a loss to University of Queensland, playing flanker in the former and hooker, once again, in the latter.

The last two matches, including an October 10 win over Richmond, Asbuns has started in the #7 jersey, and that’s the annual Varsity Match looms in December. December 8 will be the 130th meeting between Oxford and Cambridge.

Several USA players have earned Blues for Oxford, starting with Pete Dawkins in the 1960s. Only one such player, Doug Rowe, has earned a Blue for Cambridge.
