Kutztown opened Rugy East play with a 62-0 defeat of Buffalo Saturday in Kutztown, Pa. Being the only contest in the Rugby East so far, the result moves KU to 1-0 and first place, and it drops UB to 0-1.

Intermittent showers were the order of the day, and both teams had to deal with the slippery ball. Kutztown scored early in the game on good ball movement, and flanker Jordan Ghyzel took an offload to cross the goal line untouched. That was the beginning of a 12-try effort by the Golden Bears. KU managed just one conversion, with several tries being scored in the corners and the wet weather making kicking difficult.

The KU backline took advantage of the Bulls, as Nu'u Aiava and winger Robert Stortz crossed the line three times each. Fullback Trent Hensley dotted down along with wing Vetekina Malafu. The Golden Bear forwards dominated the tight play, but Buffalo was game and never backed down. Kutztown got tries from No. 8 Wes Hartmann, Ghyzel and lock Adam Greider.

Kutztown originally had a friendly with Navy scheduled for next week, but that fixture has been canceled. The Golden Bears are back in action Sept. 27 against Wheeling Jesuit. Buffalo plays that same day against Iona.
