The 2004 Army-Navy rugby match was the third of the “new era” of inter-service academy play, and witnessed the cadets from West Point defeat the midshipmen from Annapolis 24-10. The Army win tied the series at 1-1-1.

The contest was hosted by the Philadelphia-Whitemarsh RFC and played at the historic Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, PA on a narrow football field. More than 1,000 spectators attended the game.

Navy led 10-0, but Army rebounded at the 27th minute off a penalty from winger Carmen Bucci, who would kick three more penalties, accounting for 12 points. He was named the Man of the Match.

Much of the credit for the cadet’s victory went to team captain, the Irish born Liam Marmion who had played rugger in his native country.
