England RFU Chairman Appointed -  Steve Brown, the RFU finance director, was named chairman of England’s Rugby Football Union. Brown replaces retiring CEO Ian Ritchie. The executive pair operated the successful England Rugby 2015 World Cup, which saw record profits from a well-run, efficient tournament. Brown, an accountant, has been with the RFU 2011.

Cal-Berkley Rugby Freshman Class – California announced it recruited fifteen student athletes for the incoming freshman class. The breakdown by region indicates seven from California, two from out of state, and six who hold foreign passports. Rugby is the oldest sport at the institution, beginning its 135th continual year.

U-20 Trophy Cup Final – Portugal and Japan will compete for the title of the second tier, U-20 rugby championship this Saturday, September 9 in Uruguay. Japan defeated Namibia 33-13 while Portugal squeaked by Fiji 16-13. The winner will advance next year to the U-20 Junior World Championship. Canada lost to Chile 45-28, and ended the event winless.

Kiwi Sevens DJ Forbes Retires – DJ Forbes, the most capped sevens player, has announced his retirement from New Zealand rugby. He played in over 60-tournaments, won six Sevens series, and was named World Rugby (IRB) Player of the Year in 2008.

The Rugby Championship - The four southern hemisphere nations resume the second segment of the 2017 event Saturday, September 9, with New Zealand (2-0) hosting Argentina (0-2) at Yarrow Stadium, New Plymouth, and Australia (0-2) welcoming South Africa (2-0) in Nib Stadium, Perth. The Wallabies showed surprising resilience in their second, losing contest against the All Blacks, and it will be interesting to see how they do at home against a revitalized Springboks fifteen.
