Last weekend, international rugby continued around the globe, most noticeably, two matches with Rugby World Cup 2019 qualification results.
Samoa at home routed Germany 66-15 in the first of two contests to determine the Playoff spot for RWC Pool A. The outcome came as no surprise as the Samoans, ranked 17, played an emerging Germany ranked 29th. The Samoans have played in the last seven World Cups. Their sole victory in the RWC 2015 was against the USA. The teams move to Germany for the second contest but it is more than probable that Samoa will fill that Pool A slot.
The Germans, should they lose, will have one last opportunity to qualify when the participate in the four-team Repechage event. Here they would meet Canada, the Africa 2 Winner (probably, Kenya), and the winner of the Hong Kong versus Cook Islands two-match playoff.
The Hong Kong XV, ranked 21, defeated the Cook Islands, 26-3 away, and should triumph when the sides meet again in Hong Kong June 7. The Cook Islands rank 55th.
In past years, Canada would seem a cinch to win this Repechage tournament and take their place in the 2019 RWC in Japan. The Canadians have participated in all the RWCs since the first event. But Canada have fallen to 22nd in the world, with RWC America qualifying round losses to the USA and Uruguay.
Finally, making their Rugby Today debut are the Philippines, which won the Asia Rugby Championship Division I title with a two-match victory against Singapore. Congratulations to the Volcanoes. (Pictured above)
