The squad will be a big one. O’Sullivan is expected to name around 36 players as he tries to whittle down his options and looks to evaluate the form of pro players who were not available for the Churchill Cup.

Mike MacDonald, Hayden Smith, Chris Wyles, Takudzwa Ngwenya, and Samu Manoa will all available for selection this time around. In addition, we could see some more names at the halfback hinge, such as, possibly, Robbie Shaw and Troy Hall.

All of this decision-making will lead to the trip to play Japan on August 21.

That traveling squad will probably be smaller than the group named for Canada, and it is highly unlikely that anyone who doesn’t go to Japan will make the World Cup squad.

The next six weeks, then, are crucial for players trying to nail down their spot.

Among the positions wide open are 3rd hooker, 3rd scrumhalf, backup flyhalf, and at least one more outside back.
