Close tests, big upsets. With teams jockeying for positions within their conferences, there were plenty of exciting matches this weekend in D1A, D1AA, and DI Club.
With Indiana on a bye, Michigan State and Wisconsin shined in the Big Ten. The Spartans nipped Purdue, 17-14, to remain undefeated and Wisconsin blew out Iowa, 105-0, to improve to 3-1. Ohio State got back on the winning track with a 50-0 win over Illinois and Michigan beat Minnesota, 21-17.
There were only two Rugby East matches on the slate, but three other teams were in action in non-conference affairs. Penn State put up 75 points on Wheeling Jesuit on its way to extend its undefeated streak to three games and the Bonnies scored their second conference victory with a 24-13 win over Buffalo.
Revisiting their old Rugby East stomping grounds, Iona almost pulled off the upset against Army. The Black Knights scored the lone second-half try to win 17-13. For its New England road trip, Notre Dame College swept AIC, 36-22, and New England College, 58-5. Lastly, Kutztown crushed Delaware, 110-12.
In the Liberty, Cortland and Northeastern are still unbeaten with impressive victories. Cortland blanked Colgate, 26-0, and the Huskies of Northeastern clobbered Fairfield, 40-5. In the remaining games, Albany, UMass, and Stony Brook each picked up wins.
The Rocky Mountain Conference saw Air Force rock Wyoming, 71-21, while Utah State and Colorado State won in blowouts. All three winning teams are undefeated in the conference and the Air Force plays CSU next Saturday to dwindle that number down to two.
In the D1AA, Georgetown was the big winner with a surprising 35-26 upset of Towson. James Madison and Virginia Tech recorded victories in the Chesapeake while Brown, Princeton, and Penn ruled in the Ivy. The Hawks of St. Joe’s, Golden Rams of West Chester, and Mountaineers of West Virginia collected wins in the MARC and Kentucky and South Carolina crushed in the SCRC. Finally, Florida International and Florida State won in the SIRC.
In one of the most anticipated tests on the club rugby calendar, Life pushed the Glendale Merlins to the brink in the Merlins’ closest match of the season. On the road in Marietta, Ga., Glendale survived for the 22-15 win.
In DI action, all of the road teams won in the Mid-Atlantic as Rocky Gorge, Potomac, and Norfolk lengthened their winning streaks. The battle of top teams in the Midwest saw a 37-29 win for Metropolis over the Chicago Lions as Palmer, Columbus, and Cincinnati also prevailed in the division. Lastly, after a week break, Snake River and the Valley Kangaroos won in the Pacific Northwest.
