With the Eastern and Midwest college conferences wrapping up their fall seasons, multiple non-conference games took center stage this weekend. Navy and St. Bonaventure pulled off big upsets while Army, Lindenwood, Utah, and Arkansas State picked up decisive victories. In D1AA conference championships, St. Joseph’s and Kentucky won the MARC and SCRC, respectively.
With the Rugby East season complete last weekend, most of the division was still on the field on Saturday. In a stunning upset, St. Bonaventure beat Davenport, 33-32, and Army cracked the Zoomies of Air Force, 66-7. It wasn’t as joyous for Penn State and Wheeling Jesuit as they lost to Navy and Notre Dame. Lastly, Buffalo picked up a 36-20 road win over Binghamton.
In the week before the Big Ten conference championships, Indiana blanked Michigan, 40-0, and Ohio State topped Wisconsin, 43-19. Based on the results, Indiana and its undefeated record will play the Buckeyes on Saturday for the title.
Match-ups between two pairs of undefeated squads highlighted the Liberty play, but the scores weren’t close. In the New England division, Northeastern asserted its dominance over UConn winning, 53-5, and in a test between the leaders of the I-95 and Empire divisions, Iona dispatched Cortland, 57-18. Fordham, Rhode Island, and Syracuse also won this weekend.
In the big non-conference games, Utah crushed Wyoming, 79-10, and Arkansas State took out Arkansas, 31-19. In the battle of the Lindenwoods, the Lions beat the Lynx, 71-5. Colorado won huge at home against New Mexico in the Rocky Mountain and Texas and LSU scored 60+ point wins in the Red River.
In D1AA, St. Joe’s and Kentucky took home the hardware in the MARC and SCRC on Sunday winning their respective conference championships. The Hawks beat Rowan, 27-11, and the Wildcats edged Tennessee, 26-22.
Mary Washington capped off its undefeated Chesapeake season with a 43-10 win over Mount St. Mary’s and sealed its entrance into the championship. With victories on Saturday, James Madison and Virginia Tech will play next Saturday to decide who plays the Mothers for the crown.
In the Ivy, Dartmouth won by forfeit, Yale beat Harvard, and Penn blanked Cornell. The Ivy final is next Saturday pitting Harvard versus Dartmouth.
After the first meeting between the DI Mid-Atlantic’s top teams was postponed, Rocky Gorge and the Norfolk Blues finally met on the pitch and the action didn’t disappoint. 80 minutes of rugby resulted in an intense 21-17 win for Rocky Gorge. With a victory over Potomac, the Pittsburgh Harlequins evened their record to 4-4 and Schuylkill River’s win against Washington Irish improves the Exiles to 4-3.
The marathon Midwest entered its 12th week and Metropolis remained unbeaten with a 48-14 win over Cincinnati. The Chicago Lions are the closet team with 9-3 record after beating Palmer, 26-15. KC and Milwaukee also won on Saturday.
Lastly, the fall finale in the Atlantic North between two cross-town rivals saw NYAC conquer Old Blue, 52-39.
