Fall finally has arrived and there is plenty to get excited about as colder weather approaches. The highlights of Saturday include Ohio State’s upset of Indiana, a pair of intense fights in the Rugby East, an offensive explosion between Old Blue and Life, a three-way dogfight in the WPL, and multiple blowouts.

The downward spiral continues for Indiana as the Hoosiers dropped their second straight loss to Ohio State. The Buckeyes led from the start with Nick Zolikoff (2), Roman Forrestal, and Andrew Baldado scoring in the 26-16 victory. Wisconsin backed up its defeat of Indiana last week by crushing Minnesota, 74-17. Additionally, Michigan and Michigan State improved their records with wins.

The frontrunners in the Rugby East were tested as Penn State clashed with Kutztown and Army took on Wheeling Jesuit. The Nittany Lions had their hands full with the Bears as Kutztown cut the lead to two points late in the match. PSU’s Leo Van Buskirk hit a penalty with three minutes left to give his squad some breathing room and the eventual 32-27 win. With the Army versus WJU match, the Black Knights picked up a 33-21 road victory behind tries from Jordan Jurosic, Sam Sutera, James Mbony, and Bailey Abercrombie.

Big blowouts littered D1A as Iona, SUNY-Oswego, and UMass enjoyed massive wins in the Liberty; Navy crushed Clemson in its Mid-South opener; Davenport and BYU won by huge margins in the Independents; Oklahoma and Baylor won by a combined score of 154-5 in the Red River; and Colorado blasted New Mexico by 50 points.

In D1AA land, Virginia Tech, Maryland, and Salisbury won in the Chesapeake; Brown, Dartmouth, and Princeton all put up over 50 in the Ivy; Louisville came back to beat Ohio, 36-35, in the Mid-American; Rowan, West Chester, and St. Joe’s won in the Mid-Atlantic; Oregon State, Washington, and Western Washington gave the opposition a loss in the NCRC; Alabama, Georgia, MTSU, and Tennessee won in the SCRC; and Lindenwood-Belleville beat a tough Kentucky team, 33-5.

The ninth week of the WPL saw two of the top teams battle it out as the Glendale Merlins defeated Berkeley All Blues, 24-14. With San Diego beating Chicago North Shore, Glendale and San Diego are tied at 5-1-1 and Glendale is at 5-3. In the Red Conference, Beantown improved to 4-2-1 with a 39-12 win over the DC Furies and Twin Cities and New York were locked in a tight test as of the writing of this report.

Lastly in DI Club, the rematch between Old Blue and Life resulted in the knockdown, drag-out, slobber-knocker where the New Yorkers came out on top, 48-40. Elsewhere, Mystic River beat NYAC 41-26 in the ARP; NOVA and Pittsburgh won squeakers in the Mid-Atlantic; Detroit, Chicago Lions, Kansas City, and Metropolis prevailed in the Midwest; and NOVA and Boston won in Women’s DI.
