With only four weeks left in the fall season, squads from all over the country are making their moves for postseason glory.
In D1A, the Big Ten has had the most parity in the league. Undefeated Ohio State took over first place with a 22-17 win over Wisconsin. Indiana rebounded from its loss to the Badgers last week to beat Illinois and Michigan State cut down Michigan, 25-15, in the Battle for the Mitten.
Army continued to assert itself as the team to be in the Rugby East after doubling up NDC, 58-27. The other frontrunner in the conference, Penn State, battled an old friend in Iona. The Gaels did their best but the Nittany Lions came out on top, 45-31. In the last game of the Rugby East, Kutztown evened up their record to 2-2 with a 36-15 win over Wheeling Jesuit.
In the Liberty Conference, Syracuse, Boston College, and Delaware remained undefeated with convincing wins. Binghamton is nipping on Syracuse’s heels in Empire division after a 41-12 win over Cortland and Colgate bolstered its resume after beating Rugby East’s Buffalo.
Out west, Air Force dismantled Colorado, 49-8, and Utah State edged Wyoming, 17-15. In the Red River, Arkansas upset the undefeated Texas A&M, 27-24, and Oklahoma continues to roll with a 66-15 victory against North Texas.
D1AA had six conferences in action on Saturday. Salisbury, James Madison, Virginia Tech, and Mary Washington won in the Chesapeake; Brown, Penn, and Princeton prevailed in the Ivy; Miami of Ohio beat Cincinnati in the Mid-American; IUP and St. Joseph’s were victorious in the Mid-Atlantic; Western Washington, Boise State, and Gonzaga picked up wins in the NCRC; and Alabama and South Carolina conquered in the SCRC.
Saturday was a big day for the New England Free Jacks who made their exhibition debut against the Ontario Arrows. Both clubs hope to be a part of the MLR in the future and the Arrows showed that they are the more seasoned club with a 40-14 win.
In the final Saturday of the WPL regular season, the Atlanta, San Diego, and Glendale each eclipsed 40 points in blowout wins and New York beat Beantown to secure a spot in the semifinals. Every team in the WPL will converge on Marietta, Ga., next weekend for the championship. In the semifinals, San Diego plays New York and Twin Cities battles Glendale on Friday. The winners play for the WPL championship trophy on Sunday.
Finally in DI Club, Rocky Gorge, NOVA, Baltimore-Chesapeake, and Norfolk won in the Mid-Atlantic and Detroit, Chicago Griffins, Palmer, and Metropolis prevailed in the Midwest. In women’s DI, the Raleigh Venom dispatched NOVA, 25-20.
