A wild, jammed-packed weekend was filled with championships, huge victories, and devastating defeats. Bad weather postponed many games but with only three weeks left in the fall, clubs all across the country battled the elements for some of the best rugby of the season.

The WPL wrapped up its season with a double shot of games on Friday and Sunday. After the Friday semifinals, the San Diego Surfers beat the Glendale Merlins, 34-28, for the WPL Championship. Glendale were driving towards the line at the end, but the San Diego defense stood up to the challenge and win. In today’s early games, Beantown captured ninth place, the Atlanta Harlequins took seventh, Berkeley bested ORSU for fifth, and New York doubled up the Twin Cities, 35-15, to earn third place.

The marquee match on the college calendar was Army versus Penn State in the Rugby East. The clash of unbeaten ended in a 31-0 shutout for Army that clinched the conference for the Black Knights. Army scored four tries in the first half and another in the second, but it was the stellar defense that won the game shutting down a Nittany Lion offense that was scoring 41 points a match.

The big winners in D1A included NDC taking out Davenport, Wheeling Jesuit beating Buffalo, Navy crushing Notre Dame, and BYU dominating Utah State. In the Big Ten, Ohio State, Indiana, and Illinois put up large margins in their wins and Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma won in the Red River. For the Liberty Conference, Syracuse won the Empire Division by beating Colgate, UMass got the New England title over Boston College, and Iona dropped Delaware in the I-95.

In the D1AA, Mary Washington is in control in the Chesapeake with a 5-0 record and Mount St. Mary’s trails at 4-2. Dartmouth is undefeated in the Ivy; Bowling Green and Louisville dominated in the Mid-American; West Chester and St. Joseph’s scored 70+ points in the Mid-Atlantic; Oregon beat Oregon State in the rivalry match in the NCRC; and Tennessee, Kentucky, and South Carolina won in the SCRC.

In club land, Old Blue capped its undefeated ARP season with a 38-29 Elite Cup Championship victory over the Chicago Lions. The recap was posted early but Old Blue used a dominant 33-3 first half and a stiff defense to repel a Lions’ second-half rally.

In the Midwest Rugby Premiership, Metropolis maintained its stranglehold of the western division by edging Palmer and the Detroit Tradesmen tied the Chicago Lions at the top of the east table with a 28-12 win against Cincinnati. Over in the Mid-Atlantic, two matches were rained out but Norfolk survived against the Washington Irish and Baltimore-Chesapeake notched its second win in a row by beating Pittsburgh. Lastly, Boston conquered Albany, 63-7, in women's DI.
