The fall rugby is coming to a close and it's transitioning into championship season for some. Men’s D1AA and DII and women’s DI Elite have started the preliminary rounds of the postseason while the heavy hitters were action in D1A.
The Big Ten championship ended with interesting results in a conference that has been hard to predict. Wisconsin took home the title beating Ohio State, 20-13, and Indiana continued its slide with a loss to Michigan State in the third-place game.
The semifinal rounds in the Rocky Mountain and Liberty were Saturday. BYU made short work of Air Force, 110-0, and the CSU versus USU score is still outstanding in the Rockies while AIC won a close game against Syracuse, 43-38, and UMass blasted Binghamton, 71-7, in the Liberty.
Six of the top ten teams were active in the Rugby East and Mid-South. In the Mid-South, Life dominated Florida State, 122-3, in a preseason romp, Lindenwood knocked off Navy, 18-12, and Clemson beat Davenport, 28-14. In the cold and wind of the Rugby East, Penn State eclipsed the century mark against Buffalo and Kutztown outscored St. Bonaventure, 52-39, in a Sunday test.
The final touches to the D1AA field were made Saturday as Salisbury will take the at-large bid from James Madison after it lost to Mary Washington. The MARC championship between Western Michigan and Bowling Green match was canceled but both teams will advance. In the Ivy final, Dartmouth capped off its perfect season with a 37-7 win over Brown.
Scores are still coming in for the Round of 32 in the men’s DII playoffs but UW-Milwaukee, Queens College, Marquette, and Iowa Central have advanced so far.
The national quarterfinals for the women’s DI Elite are set as Northeastern blanked Navy, 29-0, and Michigan State beat Kent State, 51-17, in the wildcard games. Northeastern draws Davenport next while Michigan State plays UConn.
Lastly, in club land, Rocky Gorge and Norfolk remained undefeated in the Mid-Atlantic and will square off twice in the spring. In the Midwest, the Griffins got the best of the Lions in the Chicago derby, Palmer doubled up Kansas City, and St. Louis eked out a one-point win over Milwaukee. In women’s DI, Philadelphia remained undefeated with a 39-5 victory over Charlotte.
