The last weekend of rugby in 2018 for most clubs brought the tremendous highs of a championship and devastating lows of defeat. Over 50 games in the men’s and women’s games saw new conference winners in D1A, teams one step closer to national titles, and a new promotion to the top women’s league.
The D1A Liberty Conference concluded its season with a challenge series of eight games at Fairfield University. Rhode Island, Tufts, UConn, Fairfield, and Northeastern won the early games, but the most exciting match was Saint Bonaventure’s 45-43 defeat of Iona. In the consolation final, Syracuse beat Binghamton, 31-17.
The last match of the Liberty Challenge belonged to UMass and American International College. AIC survived a fierce battle against their opponent while playing a man down for the final 15 minutes. Filippo Banzato and Tommy Clark scored tries for the Yellowjackets and Michele Magistrali kicked a penalty and a conversion in the 15-10 win.
Elsewhere in D1A, the Rocky Mountain Conference named its champion as BYU dominated Colorado State, 96-6, Lindenwood tackled Davenport, 33-3, Navy shut out Wheeling Jesuit, 80-0, and LSU and North Texas won in the Red River.
In the D1AA, the national quarterfinals and semifinals were played in Emmitsburg, Md. and Greenville, N.C. Mary Washington and Bowling Green advanced on one side of the bracket while St. Joseph’s and Western Michigan moved on in Emmitsburg. The semifinals are on Sunday.
Sixteen squads gathered for the national round of 16 this weekend. After Saturday’s results, the quarterfinal match-ups will be UW-Whitewater vs Bethel College, Queens College vs Villanova, NC State vs UNC-Charlotte, and Iowa Central vs Vermont on Sunday.
