New Orleans swept their two-game trip to Austin, Texas this weekend, beating the Austin Blacks 42-12 and then defeating the Austin Huns 41-25 on Sunday.
The Blacks game was perhaps more worrying for New Orleans, given that the Blacks went into the weekend 3-1-1- while the Huns were 2-4 after beating Fort Worth on Saturday.
"It was a pretty big result for us," said New Orleans Coach Trip McCormick. "We're in the middle of a string of road trips and after losing a tough game to HARC we really wanted to use this trip to come back. Getting this trip together logisitcally was a task in itself, so to come over and get the result we did was great."
New Orleans showed that they can handle a tight, forwards' game and then are able to open it up late. Adam Ducoing scored three tries on Saturday, two of them late in the game when the Blacks had been run a bit ragged.
"We always know that in a physical game, if we can keep it close, we can trust our fitness," said McCormick.
The New Orleans 9-10-12 combo of Saad Bou-Mikael, Jeff Reuther, and Bobby Johns were creators for the rest of the NOLA crew, and with lock Nick Benenutti and captain Jarrett Falcon front up at the point of contact, the visitors were impressive. Patrick Kennedy and Ross Bellaci were dangerous in attack on Sunday, with Bellaci kicking 28 points over the two games.
the weekend saw New Orleans jump from 4-1-1 to 6-1-1, just a game's worth of points behind the 7-0-1 Dallas Reds.
