The Denver Barbarians Rugby Club won the 45th annual Aspen Ruggerfest rugby tournament held September 13 – 16 in Aspen, Colo., beating the Glendale Raptors Rugby Club 73 – 21 in the tournament’s championship match at Wagner Park.
The Barbos victory marked their third consecutive title at the prestigious event that began in 1968.
This year’s tournament drew teams from throughout the United States and a team from the United Kingdom.
Ruggerfest launched the Barbarians’ 2012 fall campaign that includes matches against Provo, UT, Glendale Raptors and Boulder Rugby Football Club.
“A bunch of guys hadn't played in a while, so we were knocking off the rust,” team captain Logan Collins said. “Once we did that, we started rolling, and the confidence started snowballing.”
“We know points will come — we've got the athletes and the players. We wanted to come out hot, get a few tries on the board and make our one-on-one tackles.”
Within three minutes of the start of the match, the Barbos were on the scoreboard, as their offense dominated the Raptor defense. At the close of the first half, the Barbos led by 23 en route to the 52 point differential at the end of the match.
“It's always nice to come up here and win, especially when you play this well,” Barbos head coach Jason Kelly said. “It's like we were coming fresh off the boat; we had just four trainings, then played yesterday. We didn't play well. We had a lot to work on today, and the guys did well.”
Denver Barbarians Rugby Club was formed in 1967 and has provided more than 30 players to the USA Eagles during the course of its history. Denver Barbarians Rugby Club is a member of USA Rugby’s Elite Cup Competition. Many referees, coaches, and administrators at all levels have emerged from the Barbos ranks. The Club has won championships at the National, Territorial, and Local level in both 15s and seven-a-side play.
