The September 2001 Aspen Ruggerfest witnessed the Gentlemen of Aspen defeat the Denver Barbarians 32-20 to clinch their sixth straight Ruggerfest title, and thirteenth overall since the start of the popular, sixteen team top Division.

The Gentlemen started with a 40-3 trouncing of Bozeman, followed by a 36-16 win against Charlotte. The local side was tested in the semis by the Chicago Lions, winning 19-12. Denver began with a 27-14 victory over Queen City, then a 29-14 win against Ute City. In the semis, the Baa-Baas shut out the Kansas City Blues 25-0.

In the final, the Gentlemen dominated the lineout, controlling possession throughout the match, Aspen surged to a 15-6 lead, only to find Denver rallying for seven points near half time. At the break it was 15-13. In the second half, Aspen notched three tries to advance the score to 32-13. A last-minute Denver score brought the result to 32-20,

Aspen’s Jason Walker was named tournament MVP.

The Chicago Lions beat the Kansas XV 43-24 for third place.

Aspen also dominated the Over 35 Division, winning the title 42-7 against the Kansas City Blues Brothers. The home side outscored its four opponents 155-12.

Minneapolis dethroned the California Bald Eagles in the Over 45 Division. The victors played with several players from the team’s 1978 Ruggerfest title. Kurt Hagman from Minneapolis shared the MVP award with teammate Ed Viehman.
