Over 30 teams converged on Scottsdale, Ari. over the weekend for the 19th Annual Wild West Rugby Tournament. The Wild West usually draws over 40 clubs, and tournament director Joe Freedman cited the down economy for a smaller field this year, but also said he was pleased with the quality of the participants.
The men’s bracket saw a barn burning final between the perennially tough Provo Steelers and Red Mountain, 2008 DII national champs, from which the Steelers emerged 17-15 victors. Both Provo and Red Mountain defeated the Misfits and Arizona Hurricanes en route to the final.
Provo also walked away winners of the women’s competition, the Lady Steelers having dismantled the Salt Lake City Slugs 39-7 in the final. The Lady Steelers defeated Scottsdale and Tucson to get to the final, and the Slugs knocked off the Timberdoodles, Merkins and the Las Vegas Slots.
