Scotland 36 - Samoa 33
The Scots battled into the quarterfinals, narrowly beating a determined Samoa side by three points. Scotland trailed 26-23 at the half, Samoa having given up a short meter interception near goal. Greg Laidlaw, the Scot's captain, scored 26 points with a try, three conversions, and five penalties. Samoa conceded 13 penalties in the second half.

Australia 15 - Wales 6
The battle of the Pool A heavyweights was won by the Wallabies in a game decided by penalty kicks, no tries were scored. For much of the time, Australia played with 13 men but Wales could not score with a two-man advantage. The Aussies dominated the tackling statistics 126 to 69.
