The San Diego Legion and the Seattle Seawolves advanced through their semi finals rounds to play for the 2019 Major League Rugby championship in San Diego next week, June 16. San Diego, league leader with a 12-3-1 record, beat fourth seed RUNY 24-22, scoring a try and conversion in the final three-minutes. The contest proved an even match slug fest between the two sides with tries scored under the posts from powered mauls.
RUNY were ahead 22-17, when San Diego mounted a last movement up the field, springing an outside center free with a possible try on the wing. But a bad pass resulted in a scrum, followed by a Legion lineout. The ball swung to the opposite side of the field and a try in the corner.
The game tied at 22 all. South Africa Joe Pietersen booted a tough angle kick for the two-point conversion to give the Legion a win.
The sideline stands in Torero Stadium were full. Pete Steinberg, former USA and Penn State Women’s coach, served as co-anchor of the CBS broadcast.
In the later game on Sunday, Seattle, the defending 2018 MLR champion, beat the Toronto Arrows decisively 30-17. The match inside Starfire Stadium witnessed the Seawolves vault to a 20-0 lead, and 23-7 at the break. Seattle had an 11-4-1 record during the season.
The championship match will be broadcast on CBS at 4 p.m. ET, on Sunday, June 16th.
