In Grenoble, France, last November, Les Bleues upset the Black Ferns for the first time with a narrow 30-27 win. New Zealand, then, as now were the reigning champions, the top ranked Women’s fifteen’s side.

This past weekend, in the five-nation Super Series in San Diego, the French Women scored an impressive upset 25-16 against these same world rugby leaders. The French notched three tries to just a penalty try for the Black Ferns.

For the French XV, after coming off a bad loss to Canada the week before, the victory raised spirits anew. For a moment, home country eyes turned away from the FIFA World Cup, admirably staged in France, to the rugby Women.

The Black Ferns loss sets the stage for the dramatic conclusion to this year’s Rugby Super Series, when number one ranked New Zealand will clash with number two ranked England. To-date, the Red Roses are the only undefeated side in the event. They escaped embarrassment with a slim 19-17 win against Canada, scoring a late match try.

The results so far:

England 2-0

New Zealand 2-1

France 1-1

Canada 1-2

USA 0-2

The final matches in this year’s event follow:

Canada vs. USA, July 10

France vs. England, July 10

England vs. New Zealand, July 14

USA vs. France, July 14

Final Note:

The American rugby community salutes the USA Women’s Soccer Football World Champions on their splendid victory in the FIFA World Cup. Let’s anticipate renewed national interest and sponsorship for the Women and Men’s rugby sevens teams headed for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
