Today ended the opening round of the Hong Kong Women's Rugby Sevens World Cup seeding qualification. Twelve second tier teams started the tournament with eight advancing to the quarterfinals. When the event ends, the top five squads will achieve places 12 through 16 in the July RWC Sevens at AT&T Park, San Francisco.
Impressive with three victories each were Belgium, China, and Kenya. Teams with two wins numbered Brazil, Wales, and South Africa. The four teams that do not move forward to the quarters were Poland, Mexico, Kazakhstan, and the hosts, Hong Kong.
The matchups in the quarterfinals follow:
China v Papua New Guinea
Belgium v Brazil
Wales v South Africa
Kenya v Argentina
In the July sixteen-team RWC Sevens, the first eleven places include the top ten nations based upon results from last year and outcomes from the first two Women's tournaments this year in Dubai and Sydney. Japan, by virtue of its core status in 2018, is the eleventh team.

Finally, the winner of this Hong Kong 12-team, second tier event will become next season's twelfth core team on the circuit.
