England defeated hapless Scotland 80-0 in the last match, achieving a 5-0 record and the title. Importantly, English women are paid professionals, under contract to the Rugby Football Union.
Italy have been the surprise fifteen in this year’s event, finishing second with a 3-1-1 record, their highest ever. The Azzurre upset favorite France 31-12 to secure the high placement.
Les Bleues ended 3-2 to finish third. They came closest to England, losing by 15-points, 41-26.
Wales beat Ireland for fourth, ending with a 2-2-1 record. Ireland, once a strong competitor in the series, went 1-4. The Irish women have declined since their 2014 RWC win against New Zealand.
Scotland ended at 0-5 to earn the wooden spoon for last place.
